Receiving our IANA ID means that OpusDNS is now directly accredited with ICANN, reinforcing our commitment to stability, security, and reliability in the domain industry. This accreditation isn’t just a formality—it solidifies our position as a trusted, ICANN-accredited wholesale registrar, ensuring that we operate at the highest industry standards.
ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) plays a crucial role in the global internet ecosystem, overseeing the domain name system (DNS) and ensuring its stability. The IANA (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority) ID is a unique identifier given to ICANN-accredited registrars, signifying that we have met rigorous operational, financial, and technical requirements. We are excited to announce that OpusDNS has officially received our IANA ID—marking another significant step in our journey as a wholesale domain registrar. Our IANA ID is 4340, and while it may just seem like a number, for us, it represents the foundation of what we’re building at OpusDNS.
Becoming an ICANN-accredited registrar is an essential milestone in the evolution of OpusDNS. It grants us the ability to work directly with registries, removing intermediaries and giving us greater flexibility in how we support domain resellers, registrars, and partners. This step strengthens our infrastructure, allowing us to provide a more seamless, efficient, and cost-effective service to our customers.
We built OpusDNS on the belief that the domain industry is ready for something new—something modern, intuitive, and service-focused. Direct accreditation is a key part of that journey, allowing us to build OpusDNS from the ground up with the best possible foundations.
But let’s be honest—while we take our work seriously, we also love a little fun. That’s why we decided to take a deeper look at our IANA ID and uncover some interesting facts about this number.
The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) plays a crucial role in managing the unique identifiers that keep the internet running smoothly. Its origins trace back to the early 1970s when Jon Postel, a key figure in internet history, took on the informal responsibility of coordinating protocol assignments and number allocations for the ARPANET—the precursor to today’s internet. Over time, as global internet usage expanded, the need for a more structured management system became evident.
By the 1990s, IANA’s responsibilities had grown significantly, covering three key areas:
Protocol Parameters – Assigning standardized codes and values essential for internet protocols to function seamlessly.
IP Address Management – Coordinating the allocation of numerical addresses that allow devices to communicate over networks.
Domain Name System (DNS) Oversight – Managing the root zone of the DNS, ensuring stable and consistent domain name assignments.
As the internet became a critical global infrastructure, IANA’s functions required formal oversight. This led to the establishment of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) in 1998, which took over the coordination of IANA’s operations. Under ICANN’s supervision, IANA continues to manage protocol assignments, IP address allocations, and domain registry functions, ensuring the global internet remains stable, secure, and interoperable.
One of IANA’s most recognized responsibilities in the domain space is assigning IANA numbers (also known as IANA IDs) to accredited domain registrars. These unique identifiers help distinguish registrars in the ecosystem, facilitating domain transactions, registry access, and compliance monitoring. Each new registrar is assigned a sequential IANA number, marking their official accreditation within the ICANN-regulated domain name system.
Through decades of evolution, IANA has remained a foundational component of internet governance, adapting to technological advances and ensuring that critical internet resources are managed in a neutral and transparent manner.
Having our own unique IANA ID is a big deal and part of a history we are proud to step into. This milestone means greater flexibility, stronger partnerships, and a direct path to innovation in how we serve domain resellers. It’s one of many steps forward as we continue to grow OpusDNS and reshape the industry.
So, what’s next? Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to grow, evolve, and lead the industry into this exciting new era.
